UNC Center for Maternal and Infant Health: Children and Latex Allergy
updated
Latex is rubber that has been manufactured from the sap of the Hevea brasiliensis (rubber) tree. It is used in many common items but alternatives to latex are available. Babies are not born with a latex allergy, even if the baby has spina bifida. However, children with chronic illness are exposed more frequently to latex, both at home and during visits with their health care providers, and are more likely to develop an allergy to latex than other children.
